Having the privilege of doing a monologue for the Mad Hatter Tea Party was very exciting for me. I felt wonderful knowing that I was doing my part to help bring awareness to bullying in our schools. At the event, I learned a lot about what bullying is, when to call something bullying, and how to handle bullying. The event was very educational. I had a great time! – Kara Joy
Family Patterns Matter chose The Mad Hatter Tea Party as our signature event to bring our community together to get a glimpse of how our youth are challenged in today’s society. In listening to our youth we heard, much like the English author, Lewis Carroll, who was frustrated with the world he found in chaos; our youth’s frustration in what they see happening with their peers.
As the author of Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll highlights the importance of education to prevent the chaos. In the story the characters are symbols of challenges faced that may not seem logical to a child growing up.
Alice is a sensible prepubescent girl who finds herself in a strange world ruled by imagination and fantasy. The White Rabbit is the first character Alice meets. He leads her into Wonderland. The Mad Hatter’s chaotic nature is reflected in his explanation of why it is always six o’clock in Wonderland. The Queen of Hearts rules Wonderland. She is constantly yelling “Off with their head”. In meeting her, Alice gets a taste of fear. The Garden symbolizes beauty and innocence. Wonderland is not really another world. It is in fact our own world, only seen through the eyes of a child.
